How to Calculate Fabric Consumption for Men’s T-Shirt │Textile Floor│

 In the clothing and fashion industry calculation of correct fabric consumption is very important for proper fabric utilization, cost reduction, fabric wastes control and also for proper production scheduling or planning. Especially in a knit garments its very sincerely related to understand the fabric requirements for maintaining production operations.

Therefore we search, study and derive a short effective calculations way that is how to calculate Fabric consumption for Men's T-shirts .
In this article we will show and provide a detailed method to calculate fabric consumption per dozen (CPD) for a men's T-shirt, considering necessary measurements, seam and sewing allowances, and fabric GSM (Grams per Square Meter).
We will also additionally calculate the Rib fabric requirement separately to ensure the accuracy of whole consumption.

Important Points to be Considered:
A. Measurement:
   1) HPSL (High Point Shoulder Length)
   2) Chest
   3) Armhole
4) Sleeve Length
B. Seam Allowance + Sewing Allowances:
C. Fabric GSM: 165 – 170 GSM

Calculation of Fabric Consumption for T-Shirt Per Dozen (CPD):

We have to find the part wise fabric areas that is consumption for 1. Body area, 2. Sleeve area, and additionally 3. Neck area for Rib Fabric consumption.
For calculation we have to followany of the two measurement methods like MKS System (MKS: Meter Kilogram Second)
or CGS System (CGS: Centimeter Gram Second).

1. Body fabric Consumption per Dozen (CPD for Body):

Length = 72 cm (HPSL) + 5 cm
[In Bottom Hem Sewing Allowance = 3 cm (Seam Allowance = 2 cm + Sewing Allowance = 1 cm) + In Neck (Rib) Sewing Allowance = 2 cm]
= 77 cm

Width = 100 cm (Chest) + 6 cm
[In Side Seam Sewing Allowance = 3 cm (1.5 cm + 1.5 cm) × 2]
= 106 cm or [50 cm (½ Chest) + 3 cm {In Side Seam Sewing Allowance (1.5 cm + 1.5 cm)}] × 2
= 106 cm

Now CPD for body in Kg = (Length * Width * GSM * 12 Pcs) / (100cm*100cm*1000gm)
=(77cm*106cm * 170 GSM * 12 pcs) / (100cm*100cm*1000gm)
= 1.67 Kg (for 12 pcs body area fabric)

2. Sleeve fabric Consumption per Dozen (CPD for Sleeve):

here, Armhole = 40 cm, Armhole Depth = 20 cm

Length = 25 cm (Sleeve Length) + 5 cm
[In Sleeve Hem Sewing Allowance = 3 cm (Seam Allowance = 2 cm + Sewing Allowance = 1 cm) + In Armhole Sewing Allowance = 2 cm]
= 30 cm

Width = 20 cm + 20 cm = 40 cm (Armhole) + 3 cm
[In Side Seam Sewing Allowance = 1.5 cm + 1.5 cm = 3 cm]
= 43 cm

Now CPD for Sleeve in Kg = (Length * Width * 2* GSM * 12 Pcs) / (100cm*100cm*1000gm)
=(30cm*43cm * 2 * 170 GSM * 12 pcs) / (100cm*100cm*1000gm)
= 0.53 Kg (for 12 pcs two sleeve area fabric)

3. Neck (Rib)fabric Consumption per Dozen (CPD for Neck - Rib):

If Body & Sleeve Fabric is 165 – 170 GSM
then Neck (Rib) Fabric will be (165 – 170 GSM + 40 – 50 GSM) = 215 – 220 GSM

Length = 21 cm + 21 cm = 42 cm (Neck) + 3 cm
 [Sewing Allowance (Seam Allowance = 2 cm + Sewing Allowance = 1 cm)]
= 45 cm

Width = 2 cm + 2 cm = 4 cm (Height) + 3 cm
 [Sewing Allowance (1.5 cm + 1.5 cm)]
= 7 cm

Now CPD for Neck (Rib) fabric Kg = (Length * Width * 2* GSM * 12 Pcs) / (100cm*100cm*1000gm)
=(45cm*7cm * 220 GSM * 12 pcs) / (100cm*100cm*1000gm)
= 0.53 Kg (for 12 Pcs Neck area fabric)

Therefore full Garments (12 Pcs T-shirts) Fabric Consumption
= Fabric Consumption for Body + Sleeve + Neck (Rib)
= 1.67 Kg +
0.53 kg + 0.083 Kg
